NJ Ultimate

DiscInformation for the Garden State (sm)

Version 6.0 (27 October 1999)

OK, kids,

I'm an old guy, over 40.

I ran while I could.

And now I can't.

My second knee operation, my second "career" ending injury --

first wrestling and now disc ...

I count myself as lucky.

I'll continue to maintain these pages as a public service, but please understand that I'm not out running around any more, so I don't find the pickup games, I don't plan to attend the tournaments, and I am not on rec.sport.disc every day trying to find out where and against whom I can play next. If you are interested in taking over the maintenance of the NJ Disc pages, let me know, and I'll link to your site.

In the meantime, the

DISC IS UP!!!

Tournaments

Upcoming NJ area tourneys that I have learned about are listed at my tourney page (go there).

You can zoom to information on tournaments, pickup games or summer leagues, or you can scroll down to learn what I know about teams and disc in Jersey. Or you can read why I made this mess in the first place. If you have a team, or some other disc thing happenin' in or around the Jersey area, please let me know, and I'll see if I can work you in here!

Garden State Ultimate

Where can you play frisbee in New Jersey? Any number of places -- if you know who to ask ... To my surprise, as a transplanted New Englander, NJ is (or has been in the past) a major player in the Ultimate scene -- and Maplewood, NJ is the "Cooperstown" (the Hoboken, if you will) of Ultimate -- as the sport was invented by students at Columbia High School in Maplewood. I've tried to provide in this listing a variety of contacts which should be useful in tracking down playing opportunities on a casual basis. Obviously, to move beyond casual play, that's up to you and the team to work out.

In recent years, while the Garden State has provided a modest harvest of club teams, for the most part, competitive frisbee in the NJ area -- at least as far as concerns the variant known as Ultimate Frisbee -- has been primarily a college students' game, and most of the organized activity centers around colleges and college towns. As a result, if you can get to New Brunswick or Princeton, your chances of getting into some kind of game on a regular basis is pretty good. However, as more players have graduated (or at least moved on with their lives), many have continued to play, in more or less organized clubs (these are frisbee players, not exactly the most bureaucratic personality types) -- and these clubs have expanded the playing opportunities for us who are at some distance (geographically or chronologically) from college.

Some of the club teams I have been in touch with are okay with folks showing up at practices -- or more than ok, as drop ins can become members ... but obviously you should check with the team to see if particular practices are open, closed, meaning by invitation or members only, or if the practices are preempted by a competition for a particular date/period. College teams tend to have less flexibility, with the limited school year schedule, so you should definitely not assume that practices for college teams -- especially late in the season -- are open to casual drop-ins. It can also be assumed that an "organized" team may intend some structure to practices -- like DRILLS!!! So you should not expect to treat their practices as a pickup game. Specific comments for organizations are provided, where available.

In addition, you can check out the Ultimate Players Association (UPA)UPA Logo (maybe this isn't loading yet), which organizes tournaments nationally, including some here in NJ. The UPA has a pickup list, and lists of upcoming tournaments and teams around the country and around the world, and much more!
